Artist Emma Freeman has been selected for Materiality 2, an international exhibition organised by No Place Art that foregrounds contemporary material practices. Selected from 549 submissions, the final cohort comprises 80 artists working across 12 countries, situating Freeman’s practice within a broad international field of material‑led enquiry.
Freeman’s work centres on the agency and intelligence of materials, botanical fibres, earth pigments, and lime‑based surfaces. Drawing on ancestral craft traditions to examine how matter holds memory, place, and embodied knowledge. Her inclusion in Materiality 2 acknowledges the distinctiveness of this research‑driven approach and its contribution to current conversations around materiality in contemporary art.
The exhibition opens with a private view on 18 September at 6pm at The Handbag Factory, Vauxhall, London SE11 5RB.
