Emma Freeman Brings Ancestral Presence to Hastings College Degree Show

The Degree Show opens on 12 June at the Station Approach campus in Hastings, showcasing the work of graduating artists across multiple disciplines. Among this year’s exhibitors, Emma Freeman presents a deeply resonant body of work that stands as one of the exhibition’s most compelling focal points.

Working with natural materials including handmade paper, earth‑based pigments, willow, lathes, and lime plaster, Freeman creates an environment that evokes the felt presence of ancestral memory.

Freeman’s work explores how memory can be held in matter, she constructs forms that feel both ancient and immediate, offering a contemplative encounter with the unseen threads that connect generations.

While the Degree Show celebrates the achievements of the full graduating cohort, Freeman’s exhibition offers a uniquely intimate and atmospheric experience, drawing visitors into a dialogue with heritage, presence, and the quiet persistence of those who came before.
